Exclusively For Companies With Multiple Shareholders

Shareholder Run Companies endure same sort of obstacles & challenges that one owner businesses endure including a sever economy, judging value of products or services in terms of potential clients, enhancing sales, managing costs, cash flows etc. We are helping our clients from many years to fix these issues.

However, we realize through our experience that none of these obstacles and challenges are the most heavyweight issues for Shareholder Managed Firms.

What’’s the #1 issue for many shareholder managed businesses?
The first concern for the shareholder companies is to maintain the complexity of money from different sources. In their cases, there is no guarantee that everyone would abide with a single decision, it is a debate of strong points and profit. So, there is always a chance of various disparities of decision, especially during deciding their right of way. Certainly, these talks could take a bitter turn for some people whose ideas have been rejected or not considered.

There could be difference of interests for different shareholder groups. Differences could be due to dividends expectations or personality clashes of different shareholders. Adding to it, difference of opinion might be because of different thinking of calculating the profit. Sometimes, it is more than business and people take it above to a personal level. However, these are situations which can always be improved upon and companies like these have to maintain decorum to remain steady and strong in the race. These problems can be improved significantly by real efforts.

For non-shareholder employees of organization, there may be misunderstandings & confusions that arise due to certain reasons:

  • Did John tell that as an owner or was it was just a suggestion?
  • Julian assigned me some task but I forget to report her, but she is an owner. What to do now?
  • My boss, the President, expressed that he is going to give me more responsibilities and I was very excited. Now he tells me that there are some conflicts in shareholders and my promotion is overruled. This is very irritating!

Such complex relations among shareholders give birth to mismanagement & dysfunction. Things become tougher and tougher to resolve challenges of business. Such dysfunction can be exploited by employees and shareholders. For instance:

  • If an employee is expecting opposite answer than he got, he might discuss it with others and get the answer he is looking for.
  • If the work requires a normal employee and the work is given to the shareholder, employee feels left out and useless.
  • Loss in coordination at various levels of work because of ego and difference of opinion misleads or delays a particular task.
Tensions in shareholder companies pay a heavy price. When people in the same decision do not abide with each other due to personal or professional reasons, conflicts happen. Due to this, company comes under pressure and takes a wrong decision or action, which might lead to company’s loss.

United and same thoughts lead a shareholding company towards success. But this is barely seen in these types of companies. Nothing could change that. Perfection is not possible where unlike minded people are concerned. People are unique as their fingerprints. They feel neglected to not get selected in a conversation of business.

The main fight is between the employees and shareholders. They both work differently with the same notion of making their company successful. However, they lose their path and make it a personal issue. This is how, company mismanagement and loss occurs.

At Thomas, Connolly & Phelps, we emphasize on assisting shareholder managed firms improving relations among shareholders, employee performance & organizational growth. That’s all we do and we’ve been doing it successfully since 1994 for shareholder managed companies large and small.
